Bio: Gail A. Lione is President of The Harley-Davidson Foundation, Inc., a position she has held since 2006. She joined Harley-Davidson, Inc. in 1997 and served as its Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Chief Compliance Officer until May 2010. In that role she was a member of the Executive Leadership Team and a member of the boards of Harley-Davidson Financial Services, H-D Michigan, Inc. and MV Agusta. From February 1999 to November 2000, she also served as the Vice President of Human Resources.
The Harley-Davidson Foundation, Inc. was established in 1993 to support the communities where the company has facilities, improve the lives of stakeholders and encourage social responsibility. The Foundation pursues partnerships with charitable organizations that help Harley-Davidson invest in education, community revitalization and veteran initiatives and other programs in arts and culture, health and the environment.
For the seven years prior to joining Harley-Davidson, Ms. Lione was General Counsel and Secretary of U.S. News & World Report and its affiliates, The Atlantic Monthly Company, Applied Graphics Technologies, Inc. and Applied Printing Technologies. Her first General Counsel position from 1986-1989 was with Sun Life Group of America in Atlanta, Georgia, where she managed the legal affairs and all regulatory activities of five insurance companies licensed in 50 states. Ms. Lione started her legal career as an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Ms. Lione is a member of the Board of Directors of Sargento Foods Inc., a privately held Wisconsin corporation, and is a member of its Audit Committee. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Bradley Center Sports & Entertainment Corp. and the Board of Trustees of the University of Rochester and is a member of both of their audit and personnel committees. She was a member of the Board of the National Association of Manufacturers from 2000 to 2010 and was a Trustee of its Manufacturing Institute for five of those years.
Ms. Lione's other professional associations include being a member of The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation and the Board of Managers, University of Pennsylvania Law School. She is a former member of the ABA Commission for the Center for Racial and Ethnic Diversity and the Board of Trustees of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights under Law. She was also a former Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Association Communications; member of the Task Force on the Judiciary of the Litigation Section of the ABA; and a Trustee of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. Additionally, Ms. Lione served as Regional Co-chair of the ABA Forum on Communications Law; Trustee of Client Security Fund of State Bar of Georgia; member of the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers' Responsibility for Client Protection; member of Board of Atlanta Legal Aid Society; member of ABA House of Delegates; Secretary and Director of Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Georgia. She is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Ms. Lione has been very active in the communities in which she has lived. She currently serves as Chair of the Board of the YMCA of Greater Milwaukee and is a member of the Board of the Milwaukee Art Museum. She is also a member of the Greater Milwaukee Committee. Until the end of 2007, Ms. Lione served on the Board of the United Way of Milwaukee and in 2004 she served as co-chair of the United Way Campaign for Metro Milwaukee which raised $37 million. Ms. Lione's past community affiliations include: member of Board of Trustees of the University School of Milwaukee; Vice Chairman of Metro Atlanta United Way Campaign; Chairman of Board of Atlanta Ballet 1985-1986; Chairman of Board of Special Audiences, Inc. 1983-1985; member of Board of Directors of the YMCA of Atlanta and Baltimore; the Sudden Death Syndrome Institute; and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
Her honors include the Professional Dimensions 2008 Sacagawea Award; YMCA of Greater Milwaukee Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007; the Business Journal's Women of Influence Award (Corporate Executive) in 2007; St. Francis Center Community Service Award in 2006; listing as Top 10 women in Milwaukee, Milwaukee Magazine 2006; a teaching fellowship at Salzburg Institute in Salzburg, Austria in 1989; Leadership Atlanta in 1988; Top 20 Women in Atlanta, Atlanta Business Chronicle in 1987; Top 40 Under 40, Atlanta Magazine in 1984; Outstanding Volunteer in 1984; and Outstanding Atlanta in 1982. Ms. Lione is a frequent speaker at conferences and bar association meetings, particularly on corporate governance, ethics and intellectual property.
Ms. Lione graduated Magna Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rochester with a B.A. in Political Science, and she received her J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Ms. Lione is married to Barry Grossman, a partner at Foley & Lardner, and has a daughter, Margo, who attends college at the University of Pennsylvania. She and her family reside in Fox Point, Wisconsin.
