Invitees: The Wisconsin Enterprise MBA Programs extended community (current Executive MBA and Evening MBA students, alumni, prospects, faculty and staff) Speaker: John Shiely, Retired Chief Executive Officer, Briggs & Stratton Summary: In this case, the Bermuda triangle would be offshore competition, big box retailer clout, and volatility of raw material prices, all of which had a direct impact on Briggs and Stratton. This presentation will highlight how Briggs and Stratton navigated all of these forces, with specific focus on the use of Economic Value Added as a performance measure to focus the company on the right things.

Bio: John S. Shiely served as the Chief Executive Officer of Briggs & Stratton Corporation since July 1, 2001 until December 31, 2009. Mr. Shiely served as the President and Chief Operating Officer of Briggs & Stratton Corporation from August 1994 to 2001 and an Executive Vice President of Administration from 1991 to 1994. He serves as the Chairman of the Board of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Inc. Mr. Shiely serves as Chairman of Briggs & Stratton Corp. Previously, he served as Chairman of Briggs & Stratton Corporation from January 15,2003 to December 31, 2009. He served as the Chairman of Briggs & Stratton Power Products Group, LLC. He has been an Independent Director of Marshall & Ilsley Corporation (WI) since April 1999. Mr.Shiely serves as Director of M&I Marshall & Ilsley Bank (alternate name M & I Marshall & Ilsley Bank Inc). He has been a Director of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. since January 25, 2007. He serves as a Director of Quad/Graphics Inc. Mr. Shiely serves as a Director of Cleveland Rock & Roll, Inc. (corporate board of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum). He serves as a Director of Briggs & Stratton Corp. He serves as a Member of the Board of Regents of the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the Board of Trustees of the Medical College of Wisconsin. He served as a Director of Briggs & Stratton Corp., from 1994 to December 31, 2009. He served as a Director of Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, Inc. and Briggs & Stratton Power Products Group, LLC. He served as a Trustee of Manufacturers Alliance/MAPI, Inc. Mr. Shiely served as a Director of Consolidated Papers, Inc. since 1996.
